Weekly Prompts

Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

What happens to us is not as important as the meaning we assign to it. Journaling helps sort this out.

Michael Hyatt

This quote is spot on. Sometimes, things happen to or around us that can significantly affect us. Journaling can help you determine the meaning and sometimes quash an intense effect into a more manageable feeling.

For example, my husband was carrying a case upstairs and hit a photo frame. The frame is a collage frame full of photos of my dad, who passed away. My reaction was intense. At that moment, I was fearful, angry, and upset. I reacted instead of thinking. When writing about that moment, I realized that I overreacted. It’s a photo frame. The frame can be replaced, the photos can be reprinted, and I would have lost nothing but time to fix it at the end of the day.

By journaling (and therefore having a conversation with my thoughts, feelings, and mind), I was able to decide what the true meaning of that moment was and how it affected me. This is what journaling is all about.

Weekly Inspiration

Art Journaling

A quote can define the emotion of the entire page. It can reflect happiness, sadness, or determination. You choose!

Journaling

The conversation within your pages should be the most open conversation you can have.

Creative Journaling

Combining your art with your words is a great way to release the emotions you are holding.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

25.01 Write about the day you got your driver’s license.

Were you 16? Did you pass your driving test the first time? What did you do after you got your license? The day I took my driving test, my mom drove me there and handed me the keys. She said she would wait at our friend’s house when I finished. They left me there, lol. I passed my test, and all was well. But I was terrified!

25.02 What was your first job?

How old were you? Were you scared when you started or excited? What were your job duties, and did you learn them quickly? Did you work with friends? My first job was at a restaurant in town, and I came to realize he was a pedophile. He never messed with me, but I know he was involved with multiple young girls. I am so thankful I escaped that fate.

25.03 How do you drink your coffee?

Do you like additions or syrups? Are you a latte or a fancy drink kind of person? My morning coffee is black and plain. But when I am out, I love other types of coffee. I love a vanilla sweet cream cold brew made as is, then customized with oat milk and two pumps of classic syrup. It is an absolute breakfast dessert in a cup kind of drink.

25.04 Write about a thoughtful gift that you received.

Was it expensive or worth a million in thought? I have received a lot of gifts over the years, but the smaller ones mean the most. A carnelian heart, a handmade note, a wooden gas station rose, etc. Sometimes, these gifts are more significant than anything else you can buy. It’s the fact that someone thought enough to put in the work, along with the thought to make you smile. That means the world.

25.05 If you could be human AND have characteristics of one animal, what animal would you choose?

What characteristics of that animal would you like to have? Would you want the ears and tail? The speed and strength? Can you tell that I have been watching Sweet Tooth? We are finishing up Season 3 now. If you haven’t watched it on Netflix, you definitely should!

25.06 Write about something that made you feel good today.

Keep your selection limited to today. It can be something small, like watching the cat stalk after a bug in the backyard or your husband sweeping up a mess after himself. Maybe your feel-good moment came while watching TV or listening to music. Describe that moment and how it made you feel. Remember to describe the physical effects as well. A lessening of tension or the relaxation of your facial muscles—all of these things matter.

25.07 Word of the week: Izzard.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a sentence or three. I sometimes wonder how I have gone this many years without knowing some of these words exist. I wish our school teachers had done an unusual word of the week! That would have been so fun!
