Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

The best time to begin keeping a journal is whenever you decide to.

Hannah Hinchman

The Goldilocks way of thinking. When you decide to journal, it is the right time. You aren’t too old or too young, too nerdy or too much of a jock, too male or too female. You are you. That’s all there is to it, and right now is as good a time as any.

I started journaling when I was a kid in a dark blue five-year diary with a lock on the side. I felt special, and I can still remember that feeling as I wrote in it. To this day, I still get that feeling when I sit down with my journal.

Weekly Inspiration

Journaling

Prompt journaling is a great way to get a boost in knowing what to say. The blank page can be daunting, but the right question can spur you along.

Mini collages can be an expressive way of adding to your journaling. The page here is not journaling, but it is inspirational nonetheless.

Grow, my darling, stand tall, stay strong. Aside from being a cute page, the quote drew me in and held me tight.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

31.01 When you see a journal page online, do you read it?

Do you look over the page as a whole and admire the way it’s done? Or do you zoom in to read the words? I have read some of them, especially when they are zoomed in and unavoidable. Why do you read them? Are you looking to see if someone else writes or feels like you do? What are you looking for? This prompt isn’t to make you feel guilty; it’s to bring awareness to what you seek.

Weekly Prompts 01

31.02 What are you currently looking forward to?

Do you have any upcoming plans or vacations in mind? Are you looking forward to work tomorrow? It could be as simple as looking forward to sitting on the couch and relaxing with your significant other tonight. Whatever you are thinking about, write it down. Describe why you are looking forward to it and what feelings it evokes. Happiness? Comfort? Rest? Escape?

Weekly Prompts 02

31.03 List three things that you are grateful for from this last month.

They can be large or small but list them thoughtfully and in detail. Instead of writing, ‘I am grateful for Mark,’ I would write, ‘ I am thankful for my husband and how he faithfully gets up at four every morning and goes to work to provide for our family. ‘ Or I could write about how even though he works 12-13 hour days, he still comes through and bags the trash for me. I am very blessed!

Weekly Prompts 03

31.04 What is one thing you are proud of yourself for accomplishing this last month?

Did you start a new self-care regime or workout routine? Maybe you started a diet or a new creative habit. Did you reach a new goal at work or receive praise from someone you admire? Sometimes, it can feel like we are stuck in a rut. But more often than not, by looking, you will find things to be proud of every month or even every day.

Weekly Prompts 04

31.05 What can you do today that will simplify your life tomorrow?

Yes, that may seem like a tall order, but it’s worth looking into. Look at your daily routines; dig deep. See if you can find something that you can change to make tomorrow easier. Some things that helped me were changing how I cut open water bottle packages, investing in a DrinkMate, and reorganizing the drink station by the coffee pot. Small changes done daily can make your tomorrows so much easier.

Weekly Prompts 05

31.06 Close your eyes and imagine you are in a calm and cozy place.

Imagine how tingly and happy you are to be there. Feel all of the physical feelings that that place inspires in you. Then, open your eyes and write down in detail where you were. Were you alone? Was it somewhere local or far away? Remember to write down all of the feelings that this place made you feel. The final question is: Why aren’t you there now, and how can you get there?

Weekly Prompts 06

31.07 Word of the week: Pugnacious.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a sentence or two. Do you know anyone who is pugnacious? Perhaps you are pugnacious? I’ve got to use this word on my kiddo just for kicks.
