Weekly Prompts #21

Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

You use a glass mirror to see your face. You use works of art to see your soul.

George Bernard Shaw

What is a work of art? Is it just a painting or sculpture? No, it’s a reflection of that person’s thoughts, emotions, and vision. That is what a work of art is. That reflection can come in many forms. We have painters, sculptors, thread artists, woodworking, and so many many more.

If you sit down with your journal and you put onto that page a reflection of your thoughts, emotions, and your vision for that page, that is your work of art. It is beautiful and special. It is priceless and is truly something to be treasured. Never take for granted the unique and valuable place that your journal pages have in your life.

Sometimes the best additions are the least likely. Here is a paint chip with a quote and a sticky note with important facts.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

21.01 What television series have you watched that you enjoyed?

The service doesn’t matter: Netflix, Prime Video, AMC, or anywhere else. Tell what show it was, how it affected you, and what, if anything, you learned from it. We recently watched season 2 of Outer Range, and it was phenomenal. I can’t wait for season 3.

21.02 Write about a moment, a conversation, or otherwise that affected you this week.

It can be with a significant other, a family member, or even a co-worker. Focus on a moment that sticks in your mind and made you think or feel a bit deeper than usual. My moment came at a graduation for my daughter’s best friend. I realized I hadn’t seen most of my classmates since graduation, and I am okay with that.

21.03 What do you remember about your high school graduation?

(If you still have to graduate, write about how you imagine it will go or why you didn’t have one.) Do you remember the people that were there to support you? Do you remember what you were wearing, how your cap and gown felt, how you felt about that ceremony, and how the entire day felt to you then?

21.04 How many high school classmates are you still in touch with?

How long have you and your best friend remained friends after school? Are you even still friends? Write about how you and your life has changed along the way. It’s incredible how the people we were then are so far removed from the people we are now.

21.05 What is your current relationship with yourself like?

Are you happy with who you are? Do you take care of yourself and your own needs? Do you put yourself last and too often overlook yourself completely? I spent many years believing I wanted what was around me. As my relationship with myself grew, I came to understand I was not taking care of myself or my mental health; my wants and needs did not matter at all. I was doing for others because I believed I was supposed to. Everyone else came first.

21.06 What would you do if you could stop your busy life right now and spend the next 48 hours doing only for yourself?

Money and travel time don’t count here. What would you do? I would grab my bag and head straight to the airport, fly to Anacortes, and spend every second at the coastline, just for me. I would paint, draw, daydream, and journal.

21.07 Word of the week: Ogdoad.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a sentence or two. I bet you didn’t know you use this all the time. It’s fascinating to find out there are words that have common meanings that we are entirely unaware of.
