Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Weekly Prompts

#1. What kind of chaos has been in your life lately?

Think about your life within a given time frame (day, week, month, year), and then focus on the chaos that has been present in that time. How has it helped you? Has it changed your path? Opened your eyes to something new? If it hasn’t, can it?

Weekly Prompt 01 : What kind of chaos has been in your life lately?

#2. What is your current obsession?

I have many obsessions. Some last a long while, while others come and go (mostly go). What is your current obsession? Do you have one? many? Write about it and why it pulls at you the way it does. What makes this one thing so important to you right now?

Weekly Prompt 02 : What is your current obsession?

#3. Did you have a pen pal when you were a kid?

Pen pals were not so popular for a while, although I’ve seen them being mentioned more again. Did you have one? Who was it? Where were they from? Write about that person and the letters you shared. If you didn’t… if you could have had one, write about what that person might have been like, where they would be from, etc.

Weekly Prompts 03 : Did you have a pen pal when you were a kid?

#4. If you could say F*ck off to one person in your life, who would it be?

As a general rule, I think you shouldn’t have people in your life that affect you negatively. But sometimes, that person is there. Sometimes, you can’t really be open with them or get them out of your life… who is that person for you? Why would you like to tell them off? Anything in particular you’d say to them?

Weekly Prompt 04 : If you could say F*ck off to one person in your life, who would it be?

#5. Where would your friends or family look first if you were to go missing?

Let’s assume the ‘missing’ is just conveniently out of pocket and not answering your permanently attached mobile device. Where would they find you? This can be as imaginative as you wish it to be… for me it would be on the western coast of Washington at my favorite beach. Get detailed and write it all down, where you would be, what you are doing, why you are there.

Weekly Prompt 05 : Where would your friends or family look first if you were to go missing?

#6. What is the perfect live event to attend? Concert? Flea Market? Airplane show?

There are all kinds of live events: author signings, poetry readings, concerts, outdoor markets, airplane shows, etc. What is your perfect event? Why? What draws you to that type of event, and where would it be located?

Weekly Prompt 06 : What is the perfect live event to attend? Concert? Flea Market? Airplane show?

#7. What is your favorite piece of clothing for winter?

Why? Does the piece hold significant memories or does it matter which one it is? Where and when did you get it? From who? I love scarves, but only one is special because it reminds me of Anacortes, Washington.

Weekly Prompt 07 : What is your favorite piece of clothing for winter?
