Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Weekly Prompts

#1. Write about somewhere you went this week.

This can be somewhere small or big. Did you go for a walk? Did you go to your room for some alone time, or did you go to the grocery store or mall? Maybe you went on vacation. It doesn’t HAVE to be significant; pick a place that you went to and write about it.

Weekly Prompt 01 : Write about somewhere you went this week.

#2. If you could go anywhere, where would it be?

If time, money, and perhaps family weren’t an issue, where is that one place in the world you’d like to go? Write about where that place is, its meaning, and why you want to go there. Imagine that trip and write down everything you’d like to do there.

Weekly Prompt 02 : If you could go anywhere, where would it be?

#3. Why have you yet to go to that one place you’d like to go?

Journaling with prompts can encourage you to go deeper. I am encouraging you to think this through. Why haven’t you gone? Please write it down; write out the reasons you haven’t gone. Then, stop and write how to work to make that visit a reality.

Weekly Prompt 03 : Why have you yet to go to that one place you'd like to go?

#4. If you could time travel, what time would you visit?

There are a lot of fascinating times in our individual histories. Is there a particular time that you wish that you could return to? I know for me, it would be shortly before my dad passed. I would love more time to appreciate him and enjoy his company and I would also like to thank him more sincerely for everything he taught me.

Weekly Prompt 04 : If you could time travel, what time would you visit?

#5. Look out your window right now. Describe what you see and how you feel about it.

Where we are in life is just as important as where we go. I like to randomly stop, look around and appreciate the things around me for what they truly are. At this moment, I am somewhere I don’t want to be. But I appreciate the view, the people I am with, and the reason I am here.

Weekly Prompt 05 : Look out your window right now. Describe what you see and how you feel about it.

#6. What is your favorite writing utensil?

Look at the pen in your hand. Is it your favorite? Why? How did you find it, and when did you start using it? This prompt could fill several pages for me, to be perfectly honest. I adore my Pilot Metropolitain fountain pens. All 10 of them. They all make my heart sing with sophisticated joy when I use them.

Weekly Prompt 06 : What is your favorite writing utensil?

#7. What time of the day is your absolute favorite?

Why? Is it the quiet morning hours before everyone else wakes up? Is it the late hours at night after everyone else is asleep? It may be somewhere in between. Think about that time and write down why it’s your favorite and what it means to you.

Weekly Prompt 07 : What time of the day is your absolute favorite?
