Weekly Prompts Featured Image

Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

I always carry a Moleskine journal and a simple Parker Jotter click-pen. Journaling an experience is worth more than any photograph.

Josh Gates

Have journal, will travel. Traveling with a journal can bring different images to mind. Some people carry a book and a pen, some carry an entire case around with a sampling of supplies. There are even some who do not carry any of the above, instead, they journal on their phones and then write it down at home later.

Time has taught me that a journal, a tiny notepad, a few select supplies that fit in a small purse, and my phone works for me. That way no matter my mood I can have my journal moment in any form I see necessary. I am not always good about transferring the digital back to paper so I prefer to get it on a piece of paper. The small notepad means I can jot something down and later tape/glue it into my journal. No matter which route I take, it all leads back to my journal.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. It is solely for the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen in their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

17.01 Do you believe in magic?

Did you ever? When did you stop believing? What made you stop? Magic is all around us every day; you only have to look to find it. Whether you believe in God, Buddha, or the Universe, you believe in some sort of magic. Take time today to look around you. Witness the undeniable magic that surrounds you.

17.02 Do you believe in mind over matter?

Do you use affirmations or intentions? Do you use a to-do list? What part of it do you believe in? Would it surprise you that most people use affirmations regardless of whether they know what they are using? Setting goals is an affirmation and an intention. Goal = I will succeed. No one sets the goal with the intention of not completing it. <insert light bulb>

17.03 Are you a goal setter and tracker?

Do you have a system to track your goals and monitor their progress? Is this system on paper or digital? Does the system work for you? Is there another system that interests you but you are afraid to try? Why haven’t you tried it? What do you have to lose?

17.04 If you were on a road trip right now, what would your top 10 songs be on your playlist?

Would it even be music? Are you an audiobook or podcast person? I am getting ready to hit the road for Wyoming, so I have downloaded several books and am ready to go. I also have a playlist for getting me fired up to battle those tired moments. Bring on the Foo Fighters!!

17.05 What are your go-to supplies for traveling with a journal or art?

What kind of pens and paints do you travel with? Write down a list of all your supplies that you carry with you. Why did you choose those? Do you use them, or are they a comfort crutch? My travel bag always includes watercolor, brushes, Uni-ball Vision .7 (the ink is waterproof), my journal (I do have a small B6 that stays in my purse), a mechanical pencil, a mechanical eraser, paper towels, and tape (or glue dots). Anything else comes and goes according to my desires at the time!

17.06 Name a piece of technology that has come into being during your lifetime.

Were you alive before cell phones became a part of our everyday life? What about video calls or online banking? Depending on your age, this may be a part of technology, not the entire device.

17.07 Word of the week: Taradiddle.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a sentence or two. I like this one enough that I may start using it.
