Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Weekly Prompts

#1. Do you allow yourself messy journal pages?

We see so much perfection in journal (bullet journal and regular) posts. Perfect writing, beautiful artwork, straight lines. Does this bother you? Are you okay with your own messes? How do you feel about them? Now ask yourself why? Why should they bother you? Why do you feel pressured to make them better? Your journal is for you and should reflect you in the moment you are writing it.

#2. Who is your favorite artist?

There are so many varying artists out there. Who is your favorite? Why do you feel drawn to that particular artist? Are you drawn to their story or to their artwork? Do you know their back story? Research them if you don’t. Write about this artist, their work, their life, and what it means to you.

#3. What smell causes you to pause and breathe deeply?

Is it the smell of bread baking, coffee brewing, fresh cut grass, the ocean? If there is one smell (or multiple), write them down and explain what that smell does to you physically. Then, explain why it affects you so much. For me it is the smell of fresh cut grass that affects me the most.

#4. What is something your person (significant other, friend, child, etc.) does that makes you proud?

It is easy to get distracted by the mundane in a relationship. Look closely at one relationship (you choose the person) and at that person’s actions. What is something that makes you proud of that person, of their behavior? Is it the way they treat others? Or maybe the way that they treat you.. write it all down and explain why.

#5. What is a positive habit that you would like to have?

There are a lot of habits that a person can have. We are quick to pick up on bad habits, but have to really work at the positive ones. It’s not fair but that’s how it goes. What is one you’d like to have? What area of your life does it affect? Will it help you with your family or your work? Is it personal? How will it help you? Why did you choose that habit? Why aren’t you working on starting it?

#6. Name something that you love about your body.

Once you identify something you love about your body, explain fully what you love about it. Why does it make you feel good? Why did you choose that part over another? Is it something you’ve worked on or were blessed with?

#7. What are some ways you can celebrate your entire body for the perfection that it already is?

Put everything you want to change about your body aside. Your body (even with all of your perceived faults about it) has gotten you to where you sit today. Are you a parent? It gave you those kids. Are you a friend? It allows you to think, love, and care for your friends. Your body is how you hug people, help people, show up and see people, and so much more. Recognize and celebrate the fact that your body exists and does so much for you.
