Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.
How To Use Weekly Prompts
Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.
Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.
In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.
Focus Quote
I love my journal as much as I love my phone. I find it to be a big part of my self-care to reflect on my day and write words that inspire me or paste business cards and pictures.
Franchesca Ramsey
With the invention of the internet and then smartphones, your phone is now a tool. Mine is not even half a communication device. I take care of all of our household bills, navigation for travel, booking and reserving places we stay, as a ticket for an event, the time of course, but also for the moon phases, weather, and calendar. I could honestly keep listing ways that I use my phone for a long time. With all that it does, even with being able to keep a journal on the phone, it does not replace a handwritten journal for me.
The sound of the pen scratching along the paper, the feel of the book beneath my hands (either open or closed), the comfort I get from dumping my thoughts, feelings, aggravations, dreams, and desires down on the page, all of that accumulates into a deep abiding love. The journal is the bigger of the two tools. It replaces a therapist, friend, or confidant. It keeps up with all of the pieces of me that I am just not strong enough to carry around all the time. I would be lost without my journal.

The Writing : It’s the writing that counts. Just do it. Write about anything, anytime, all the time.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!
Weekly Prompts
23.01 Describe one thing in your life that you need to let go of.
Is it a person or a habit? How does this one thing affect you on a day-to-day basis? Is this something on your mind often and continually leaves you feeling bad about yourself for hanging on to it? These things are generally addictions, and they can come in all forms, such as the internet, television, nail-biting, etc. Not all addictions are as talked about as gambling or smoking, but all addictions can be detrimental.
23.02 What is something you could do right now to improve your life?
Describe what you’d like to do and how it could affect you if you made it a habit. Could you find time in the day to meditate? Consider adding a morning or evening walk into your daily routine. Do you like to paint, draw, or read? Try setting aside just ten minutes for yourself. I read somewhere that ten minutes is the easiest way to start; anyone can find ten minutes. This method is how I built my morning routine, and it worked!
23.03 Is there a book you’d like to read or a movie you’d like to see?
Write about it; if it’s a book, what is the book about, what genre, who is the author, and why does that book appeal to you? If it’s a movie, who was the producer, what’s it about, who is in the film, and what about it appeals to you? I have a broad, eclectic taste in books and movies. I want to see them all and read them all.
23.04 Is there something in your life that keeps you from feeling peaceful?
Describe what it is and how it is affecting you. Then, list some steps you can take to alleviate the discomfort that issue is causing. I like to make pros and cons lists. Generally, I can find a way out of the problem by looking at both sides of the problem. Sometimes, I realize that the cons are worse than the current issue, and it helps to shift my perspective on the one matter at hand.
23.05 Write about a time when you laughed so hard you cried.
What happened? Who was with you? Were you laughing at them or with them? I am so blessed to have a lot of laughter in our family. My daughter often makes me laugh until I cry, and I love that about her. Her outlook on life and the day-to-day things that are happening really keep me laughing.
23.06 How do you feel about wildflowers?
Which is your favorite? My favorite is the Indian Paintbrush. It’s been my favorite for as long as I can remember. Some wildflowers are invasive and basically just weeds, but I love them. I wish I had a field full of them outside my window every season. There’s something about their strength and perseverance that appeals to my heart.
23.07 Word of the week: Foofaraw.
Look it up, write the meaning, and then use it in a sentence or three. I love these words; they look like complete typos but have meaning!
