Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

Writing is medicine. It is an appropriate antidote to injury.
It is an appropriate companion for any difficult change. — Julia Cameron

The word medicine comes from the Latin medicina (the medical art),
the verb root of which is mederi (to heal).

Medicine can come as a pill, a liquid, food, a supplement, laughter, a soul mate, etc. Anything that improves your well-being mentally or physically is medicine. If it heals you, it is medicine. Journaling can heal you. It can heal small aches and pains, it can heal your anxiety and depression, it can relax and soothe your mind which in turns helps to ease off physical manifestations of your worries and problems. That’s not to say that writing in a journal will instantly heal any problem, but just like with other medication in time it can improve and sometimes obliterate your symptoms.

I rely on my journal as a dumping ground, a record keeper, and a hydrocolloid bandage for my soul. It works in layers, protecting the outside while healing the inside.

Art Journaling

Rebecca Blair has been around for a long time. Her art pages are so appealing. Though complicated, they are also full of inspirational patterns that you can add to your own journal pages.

You can find more of Rebecca Blair’s artwork on her instagram account.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

34.01 On a traffic light, what does that yellow light mean to you?

I’ve noticed that my reaction to that light varies. Some days, it means slowing down and stopping (as it should). However, on other days, it means to floor it and get through the light. Amazingly, it doesn’t seem to be recognized by 85% of drivers here in the LA area. When it turns red, it only means stop after it’s been red for about 2-3 full seconds. It’s funny and scary!

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 1

34.02 What is your power color?

Most of us make choices with our clothing that we aren’t even aware of, while some people are highly aware of color. Do you have a color that you wear when you want to feel strong, confident, and powerful? What is it about the color that speaks to you? Does it remind you of something else?

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 2

34.03 What colors evoke calm and comfort to you?

Is this color something that is in your wardrobe? This color may be persistent in your home decor. How does the color make you feel? Where do you like to see it? I am a huge fan of gray. The majority of my t-shirts are dark, heather gray. They may have color designs, but that base is always dark gray. My favorite time at the beach is when clouds shield the sun, and everything has a gray tint.

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 3

34.04 What color or color schemes have you fallen in and out of love with over the years?

Some color combos I have loved over the years are dusty rose and blue, peach and green, lime and purple, black and red, turquoise and red. Because of my past changes and dislike for those colors later on, my house has to have a neutral palette so that I can change color schemes with the decor.

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 4

34.05 What does the poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe mean to you?

Have you read it? If not, read it. What do you feel when you read it? Are you affected by the haunting love that’s in his words? Does it evoke a sense of romance and love lost? Or a sense of longing and regret? This poem has been my favorite since I first read it in the 80’s. I’ll never forget the feelings I had then and still do when I read it now.

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 5

34.06 Do you have an internal nagging critic?

That voice inside your head that says you aren’t good enough, smart enough, or whatever. Give that voice a name. Write about that person, how that person makes you feel, and why you give that person so much space in your head and heart. Write about why that person needs to shut up and go away.

Weekly Prompts 34 - Prompt 6

34.07 Word of the week: Razzmatazz.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a few sentences.
