Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Focus Quote

Keeping a journal of what’s going on in your life is a good way to help you distill what’s important and what’s not.

Martina Navratilova

Life can come at you at the speed of light. There’s work, family, friends, and, of course, your personal wants and needs. There are doctor appointments, household chores, events and activities, personal care time, and all of those other moments that happen one after another. Your planner brings all of this together and helps you to schedule your time more wisely.

Your journal can help you to view it through an importance lens. Cleaning the garage is important to the house, but is it always important to your mental well-being or to the memories you want to keep? Does knowing it took three hours to clean that garage properly help you understand your reactions to events that happened during the day? I mean, sometimes the answer is yes (haha) if you are a bit obsessive about how the garage looks. But at the end of the day, when I am journaling, the garage and the cleaning are not important enough to go into detail about.

As a long-time journaler, you may not question how you disseminate information. It may come naturally and has become a habit or way of journaling over time. But if you are new or relatively new, these are the kinds of things that you are actively learning. The important part of cleaning that garage may only be how it made you feel afterward.

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. They are solely about the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes, that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen on their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!

Weekly Prompts

44.01 Describe a high school football memory.

Did you go to football games? Were you on the team, in the band, or a cheerleader? Maybe you were part of the staff at the field? Was the game in your hometown, or did you travel to an out-of-town game? Did you go with friends or alone? Describe your favorite memory and how it made you feel. Who were you with, what did you do, did you eat at the concession stand?

Weekly Prompts 01

44.02 If being honest is rude, do you lie?

This is the trickiest of questions. Honesty is the best policy, right? What about if the answer is rude? Do you tell fibs or outright lies to avoid being rude? Should you? I will lie every time to avoid being rude or hurting someone’s feelings. Every.Single.Time.

Weekly Prompts 02

44.03 Where do you stand on modesty?

So many people have different ideas of what modesty is or isn’t. I am GenX, but I fall more in line with Boomers in terms of modesty. Honestly, I find a good-fitting pair of jeans sexier than underwear. I believe the mystery is more attractive than laying it all out on the table. What about you? How do you feel about all of the skin seen in public these days?

Weekly Prompts 03

44.04 Do you trust your partner?

Trusting someone can be challenging if you have been taken advantage of in the past. Do you trust your partner to have your best interest at heart? What about trusting them to be faithful and honest? When you feel mistrust, ask yourself if there is any evidence to back it up. If there is, mistrust is warranted. But if there isn’t, go forward slowly. Accusations can destroy a relationship, and finding out later that you were wrong makes the entire event a bitter pill to swallow.

Weekly Prompts 04

44.05 Do you trust yourself?

When you make a decision, do you move forward immediately? Do you trust yourself to make decisions? Do you trust your choices in people? If not, what makes you mistrust yourself? Was your trust misplaced in the past? It is important to remember that the fault was on them if it was misplaced. You are not at fault for trusting someone who failed that trust.

Weekly Prompts 05

44.06 What is your favorite Halloween candy?

I can hear the echoes of ‘Candy Corn’ now. But honestly, I can’t stand the stuff! I can still remember those piles of candy we used to get at Halloween, and there was nothing more exciting than pouring them all out and sorting the haul into likes and dislikes. I loved Pixie Sticks and Jolly Ranchers. The chocolate always seemed luxurious and special. I think we guarded those with our lives!

Weekly Prompts 06

44.07 Word of the week: Tintinnabulation.

Look it up, write it down, and use it in a sentence or two. I know a lot of parents will experience tintinnabulation over through Halloween!
