Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Weekly Prompts

#1. What is your favorite flower?

We just had our week of overload on roses and hearts. Valentine’s week brings roses front and foremost to your mind, but what is your actual favorite flower? Is it roses? Mine is the Indian Paintbrush. It’s a wildflower that has always caught my eye and when I pass a field of them the swell in my heart is overwhelming.

#2. What Valentine’s day was the best you experienced?

Write about one Valentine’s Day that stands out. Did you get a present that stands out or did you spend the day doing for yourself? It may be commonly thought of as a day for lovers, but love comes in many forms. Loving ourselves is the most important love of all.

#3.What is one way you can show yourself love today?

I think it is important to show yourself love more than once in a while. What is something you could do today? Is it a meditation session? A walk in nature? Time reading a book? Anything you can think of that you can do for yourself is an act of love. Take time and find something that makes you smile.

#4.Write a letter to yourself about all of the good things you have done or experienced this past year.

Today, spend some time writing a letter to yourself and telling yourself how proud you are for all of the good things you have done this year. Did you compliment someone? Take someone to lunch? Clean someone’s space? As a mom, I do lots of chores that are for others but sometimes I forget to take time to do for others outside of the chores.

#5.Make a list of things you love.

This can be as fun and silly as you want it to be. It can also be serious. What do you love? Chocolate? Hirono Blind Boxes (don’t ask), fountain pens, watercolor, sunshine? Make a list and make it as big as you can.

#6.Who was your first boyfriend/girlfriend/crush?

Obviously, we all had more than one in our younger years, but who was your very first that you can remember? Mine was Todd, he was in my grade and we got married in Kindergarten with Paul as our minister. Our honeymoon was down the slide! Write about yours. What do you remember? Was it short-lived? What did you like about them?

#7. What is a candy that once brought you joy (or still does)?

Candy is fun any time of your life, age is not a requirement for the joy of candy. Age does affect the taste I’ve noticed, but it can still be fun. Today we got a Pez dispenser that was Valentine’s Day themed and laughed to near tears as we tried to get it filled! It was always so easy as kids! What candy have you tried lately and if none, why not? Go get something fun!
