Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.
How To Use Weekly Prompts
Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.
Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.
In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.
Weekly Prompts
#1. How do thunderstorms make you feel?
Are you comfortable with the thunder and lightning or do they scare you? I am fascinated by the entire event. I love to watch the clouds coming in and building up. I love the feel of the air before the rain comes and I honestly love the rain too. I love the wildness of the wind and streaking lightning in the sky. I love every tiny thing about thunderstorms.
#2. What’s the funniest dream you can remember?
I had this dream the other night that made me laugh so hard that I woke up and the whole bed shaking! In the dream, my daughter gave my mom a present. When my mom put the ‘hat’ on her head, my sister covered her eyes with her hand, head down, and said, “Mom, that’s not a hat, it’s a penis sling!” I don’t even know where that came from, but it was hilarious!
#3.What behavior in one of your friends disturbs you the most?
Do you have a friend who gambles too much or smokes? What do they do that bothers you? Write it down and then explain why that behavior bothers you so much. Sometimes, it’s important to separate yourself from the actions of others. You are not their keeper. It’s okay to have and feel concerned so long as you remember that it is their burden to bear.
#4.Do you think watching violence in movies and TV affects people? How?
I generally fall on both sides in this area. I don’t believe it makes people do more bad things. People who do bad are going to do bad with or without television violence. I do think it numbs us to the seriousness of violence. We see it on TV so much that we don’t get as shocked and bothered by it happening in real life.
#5.What would you do if you were eating a salad and halfway through you saw a dead green bug?
This happened to my daughter this week and her reaction was done. Completely done. She put it away and didn’t finish. I realized I wasn’t as bothered. I figure we eat lots of bugs without knowing and so long as that was the only one.. *shrug* might as well finish!
#6.Write about a present you received but didn’t like. Who was it from? What was it? Why didn’t you like it? Most importantly, how did you react?
As a general rule, I like to receive any gift with gratitude and silence. The gift itself can suck, but that person went to the trouble and thought of me… so I like to make them know its appreciated and give them the gift of knowing they made me happy. Thankfully with my mom, we are allowed to be super honest lol.
#7.Word of the week : Widdershins.
Look it up, write about it, use it in a sentence.
