Weekly Prompts #12

Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.

How To Use Weekly Prompts

Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.

Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.

In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.

Weekly Prompts

#1 What is your favorite holiday?

What makes it meaningful for you? I am a huge Christmas fan; I love the lights, the songs, and the smells—it’s the most comforting time of the year. I love to wish people a merry Christmas everywhere I go!

#2 Write about a coincidence that happened to you lately.

Was it funny or entertaining? Was it unsettling or odd? Coincidences (coinky-dinks, as we call them) are sometimes pure entertainment. Then, there are times when they leave you wondering about the world beyond. Recently, my daughter had a random thought about Night at the Museum. The next day, she walked into my grandaughter’s room, and it was playing on their TV.

#3. If you could swap lives with any celebrity, who would it be?

Why did you choose that person? What is it about their life that seems better than yours? Do they have problems that seem as impossible as yours sometimes can? I believe the grass is always greener on the other side, but I really wouldn’t mind having their money!

#4. What are your favorite pizza toppings?

The toppings we get sometimes reflect those around us or a group’s likes and dislikes. So, what is your absolute favorite? Extra cheese? Mushrooms? Tomatoes? Describe your favorite pizza from top to bottom!

#5. What is the best dream that you can remember?

What would you do if you won a 300 million dollar lottery tomorrow? Would you keep your job or quit and have fun? Would you blow the money or invest and make it last? Describe what you would do and how you would feel. Would you help out anyone else?

#6. Create a list of 5 unique and quirky things to put on a bucket list.

You may want to travel around and visit the largest items you can find. Did you know that the world’s largest mailbox stands in Casey, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio is home to the world’s largest rubber stamp? So, what kind of fun and quirky things can you think of? Make your list!

#7. Word of the week: Interrobang.

Look it up, write about it, where does it come from? What does it do? I was interested in this one; I just found out it existed! So exciting! I am also very interested in its cousins and using them in my day-to-day writing!
