Weekly prompts to help you think a little harder, write a little longer, and have a bit of fun in your journal. I provide the prompt and then a bit of discussion afterward to help you think beyond the prompt.
How To Use Weekly Prompts
Using weekly prompts can be as simple or as difficult as you would like. I do not use one every day, and sometimes I use several from the weekly prompts list at one time. Over time, I have learned that too simple doesn’t work for me. I like to push the question around in my mind, look at it from a couple of different perspectives, and see what comes out.
Imagine, if you will, the prompt as a unique piece of artwork. Put that piece of artwork on a pedestal and then move around it. Look from side to side, high to low, and anything between. I want it to speak to me, give me thoughts, and guide my thoughts into a deeper understanding.
In all seriousness, I do study the question. I don’t spend hours on it and sometimes not even minutes. A few seconds and a few pointed questions after. Generally, those questions begin with why. Why did the prompt spark that response? Does that matter to me, and why? Why did I choose that answer/point? My meanings and questions can be vastly different from yours. That’s okay! The prompts are supposed to spark YOUR thoughts and feelings.
Focus Quote
Writing is like breathing, it’s possible to learn to do it well, but the point is to do it no matter what.
Julia Cameron
Julia Cameron’s morning pages are brilliant. Her book has excellent reviews and, amazingly, some negative ones. I will only say that I purchased it to learn about the morning pages. I now do morning pages religiously, and they have helped me immensely. Her website is inspirational, and I love reading her words.
Isn’t that the fantastic thing about any book, though? Some people love them; some people hate them. This love-hate can be true about your journal pages as well. Some pages you will hate, and some you will love. It doesn’t matter if it’s full of writing (you may hate your penmanship that day) or if you’re completing an art journal page, and when you finally hit that, I can’t go further because I hate it so much spot; you give in. That’s okay. It is entirely normal, and we have all been there. Unfortunately, you
don’t hear people saying that much. You will not find many photos online of pages that people hate in their journals. There are tons of pages in my journals that suck. Sometimes, I create on top of them and hide what I hate about the first page. Art journaling is great for this!

This question sparks thoughts of journaling. Isn’t that what journaling is? A journey into yourself?

The images that I choose for inspiration are not about the links. It is solely for the images and what they represent. I love seeing other people’s journals. I love the inspiration that hits me to go write in my own. Sometimes that inspiration leads me to try something I have seen in their pages. Mostly, it just inspires me to write!
Weekly Prompts
19.01 When you hear ‘spiritual’ journey, do you think of God or a new age philosophy?
Does the simple act of reading the words make you want to avoid hearing the message? Or can you hear the message and mold it to fit your own life and beliefs? I have learned that I can be very flexible. If you talk about your belief and I see its benefit, I can still apply it to my life.
19.02 Write about an experience you had with water.
Was it a majestic and loud waterfall? Have you sat by the ocean and listened to the waves? What about a river? The song of a river is unending and incredibly soothing to those drawn to water. No matter what water it is, the sight and sound of that body of water fills my soul in a way that I can’t explain.
19.03 Describe your first prom.
Did you have a date? What did you wear? Were you nervous, scared, excited, bored? How did you feel before going versus after you arrived? Did you have fun and dance the night away? Were you one of us who faked it til you made it? Did you feel awkward and out of place? Write it all down in detail.
19.04 Do you have children, or do you want children?
If you have children, write about them. Describe the personality traits that they have and that you love. Describe the traits you don’t like. If you don’t have children, write about the children you would like to have or why you don’t want any. Just know that you are where you are meant to be at the end of the day. I was blessed with my miracle baby at 31 years old.
19.05 Do you feel that you are a creative person?
Do you have a set of skills that make you feel creative? Is there an area that you wish you were more creative in? Do you write, paint, draw, build, craft, sew, weld, cook, or anything else? I believe that every person has a creative ability. It is not uncommon for someone to believe that their talent is not considered creative.
19.06 When was the last time you took yourself on a date?
Where was it? What did you do? Why did you do it? If you haven’t ever or in a long while, why not? Today, I took myself to the river and journaled. Then I went for a long walk and stopped along the way to really look at the plants and flowers. Afterward, I took myself to a rock shop in Thermopolis, WY, and bought myself a beautiful piece of rose quartz.
19.07 Word of the week: Billet-doux.
Yes, it’s French, but it’s such a great word! Can you pronounce it? Do you know what it means? Look it up, write down the meaning, or maybe write one to yourself!
